I am surprised to read all the neg stuff about Splenda in these forums. I have read some "bad" things about it, but most have been generated from that whack job Joseph Mercola.

I have found splenda to be a great sugar substitute. Took a while to get used to it's "lighter" strength than Sweet & Low or Equal, but I have, and even better that I am enjoying things "less" sweet these days. And the health issues with S&L and Equal make it the hands down thing to do.

I have tried Stevia and that one that people say tastes like licorice (cant remember the name at the moemnt). Both were terrible.

Can anyone comment?

" Thats the reason that I have been searching out totally natural alternatives. I think the jury is still out on these substitutes for years to come and I think there is a lot of misinformation out there. mad.gif I dont want to go off on Spenda, so just suffice it to say I've never tried it nor plan to. After a total sugar removal from my diet, I did a lot of reading on the subject, and decided to try Agave Nectar (very delicious by the way). I was even happier when I managed to find it locally, not having to purchase it online. I am very happy with the agave, and I think that everyone should use what they feel is safe and heathful for themselves and their families. Remember that children dont get a whole lot of choice of what goes into their bodies, and the fact that they are so much smaller seems like it might make them more vulnerable to side effects. I never tried the Stevia, beacuse I really really dislike licorice. Hope this helps! smile.gif Have a gr8 day!

Stevia is not the licorice thing, but both were terrible to me, so..

Agave is sugar, in essesnce, yes? So no good for diabetics.

What I have seen about Splenda is that it is, at the very least, and for lack of a better term, the lesser of three evils, I guess. I have not had any health issues related to it, i think foods tatse better with it, and while it may not be "natural" it is a derivitive, unlike the other two.

Just a note,
Agave is a sugar yes, but a sugar with LG effect so therefore it is ok for diabetics.
If it is SB legal it is ok for diabetics, all sugars are not created equal.
The culprit is sucrose, HF corn syrup, etc.

honey glycemic index of 58

I am not saying these #'s are factual (culled from this site), but based upon a GI of ZERO for Splenda.....

BTW, that OTHER natural sweetener, we just figured out which one it was...

FWIW, I put a full packet in a small coffee and tasted no sweetness whatsoever.

Thank Goodness for Splenda! It is my sweetener of choice -I do not like the diet coke with Splenda - I prefer original diet coke. As for everything else - Splenda!

The above statement isn't entirely correct.

The important thing to look for in Agave is that you are getting blue weber agave...the GI is more like 19, not 46...which is extremely low.

Wild agave has the higher G.I. and that is what you find a lot of (it is cheaper). So be sure to check what type of agave you are getting and then you can eat as much as you like and not have to worry about the GI, however, it isn't calorie free. smile.gif

My lists show agave with a GI of 10 or 11. It is either 90 or 97% fructose.

Splenda is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, so the amount of this per serving is really small. In order to make the little yellow packages feel right and provide the right amount of sweetening, a bulking agent is used. This is dextrose maltodextrin. Read the label. I don't know the GI of this, but I think it is quite high. Dextrose is 100 as it is the reference for the GI system. Maltodextrose is about 120, but I don't know about maltodextrin (not the trin vs trose ending, this means something to the chemisty folks, but not to me. Tthe trose is a sugar, but I don't know what the trin is).

So, the GI of the home version of Splenda is actually much higher than fructose or it's natural form, agave.

If you buy commercial products, particularly soft drinks, sweetended with splenda, they probably were sweetened with the pure stuff, not the stuff bulked up like the home product. So then, the GI is zero.

If anyone would like to try a stevia product that is good go to www.jayrob.com
It is the only one I have ever found that tastes good. It is extremely sweet and great for coffee etc.
in small amounts. I use it on my oatmeal also. He also makes a protein shake from egg whites for us allergic
to soy or lactose intolerant. His bars are to rich and heavy on carbs.
Hope this helps someone. BTW a jar of stevial lasts me 3 months so don't let the price scare you. Dona
