What's a Dutch oven? And can I use something that I have to cook this in???
By the way, cabbage rolls are my favorite! (I can't wait to have this soup)

Peanut, you should be able to use any large pot for this.
I think a real Dutch oven is a large footed cast iron pot with a concave lid (as apposed to the normal domed lid). Made to use on an open fire. The concave lid can be loaded with hot coals so you have even heating from the top and bottom of the pot. Makes for more efficient fireside cooking!
When I was a kid we lived in tents for a few years (my parents were hippies!) so we had several Dutch ovens for cooking in.

Sam's right Peanut. You can use any big soup pot for this.
I think most people think of a Dutch Oven as a heavy cast iron soup pot. I haven't seen those original ones with the feet and concave lid for years. I didn't know wthat they still made them. How cool!
I love cabbage rolls too and this is a great way to get that taste without all the work of rolling the rools.

Hey Molly! Yeah, you can still get those cast iron Dutch ovens! My DH stopped at the Lodge factory store and picked one up for around $20 (factory second). It has a 'blemish' that made it a second.... darned if I know where the blemish is! We have (I think) a 6qt. which is huge, but they also come in 12qt!
Lodge has a website (
http://www.lodgemfg.com ) that you can probably order from. Wagner might have them as well! I love cooking in cast iron. We have a rather extensive collection so far!

Thanks Sam! I'll check that out.
I have a Cast Iron Skillet that my father bought me thirty five years ago when I first set up housekeeping. He insisted that I needed one to make fried potatoes. (of course I no longer use it for that) It has a lot of sentimental value and still cooks to perfection.
